There is more to know about Gigabit Ethernet, what else is it used for?
Gigabit Ethernet, the technology that is used to create the GigE camera is a transmission technology that is based on the Ethernet frame format and protocol. It is used in local area networks (LANs) and it provides a data rate of 1 billion bits per second, which is equal to one gigabit. Gigabit Ethernet is currently being used as the backbone in lots of enterprise networks. It was developed for an even faster Ethernet standard to handle the network traffic that was generated on the server. And not all Ethernet is created equal, theses days there are two available standards: the Fast Ethernet and Gigabit. They are completely distinct speed interfaces. The difference is important, because otherwise you can not choose if you need Gigabit Ethernet or Fast Ethernet. Ethernet was first introduced to the public in 1980, not very long ago. It had a maximum throughput of 10 megabits per second. In 1995 they released an updated version of Ethernet, that was Fast Ethernet. It had a throughput of 100 megabits per second, and the newer version was introduced a couple of years later. 1 gigabit per second was the new throughput, which was indeed a lot. Most modems and routers do have Gigabit Ethernet.
